PostSubject: dunno where to put this..hehehe   Thu Jun 03, 2010 6:22 pm

not sure where to post this .what i'm trying to achieve is an ad for extreme sports anyway, so diri nlng.

this is what i've been doing these past couple of weeks. when the light stuff i've waited for ended up in my hands, i figured why not study and test light in an exciting way. I ended up collaborating with Iligan City Skateboarding Association in the making of their skate video. Also, this is gonna be my long term personal project. Here's one picture and it's linked to a bigger size in my multiply.

skater - CLIFFORD CHAMBERS
LOCATION -Ilaya, Iligan City..

why this wasn't easy?
1. uhm nikon d60 with a 35mm lens
2. slow focus
3. nighttime has its advantages but uuughhh not a strong streetlight in this perfect skate spot.
4. slow flashes ( 2 YN460's)
5. used 400 iso (considering the capabilities of a d60 at high iso, i think it's risking the image quality)
6. using the sync speed of my system (250 when the batteries are perfect) can barely freeze these fast moving guys.

Limitations, huh. this may sound like i'm whining 'bout my equipment, but i'm not.. i hope i produced a good picture here.

just sharing. Wink

This is exciting. I haven't done this kind of photography, but some observations ...

on # 2 - IMHO how fast a cam focuses isn't a factor here. You have control of your subject, so you can set focus to M and pre-focus. Just mark the spot on the ground where you'll trip the shutter when the subject crosses it.

# 3 - Unless the background is exciting, then you don't need strong streetlights. But your subject is exciting enough, with just the flash illuminating it, so I wouldn't worry about the absence of street light.

# 4 - Maybe not "slow" flashes but "not powerful flashes"? If I got it right, then just move the flashguns closer to the subject, just outside the frame. If "slow" you mean slow to recycle, then yeah, you may need the faster and, um, more expensive ones so you can do burst shooting. But since you have subjects willing to do the stunts for you, you just have to keep shooting and shooting until they get tired. Like this shot of Camiguin boys I took years back (http://www.pbase.com/timonera/image/28930580), they repeatedly jumped into the water w/o complaint, so happy in fact everytime I show them the LCD screen.

# 5 - Don't worry too much about noise. In lowlight situations, people are expecting grains to show up there. Besides, only pixelpeeping photographers would worry about noise; the general public, who are your intended audience, won't. If the shot is brilliant, has the wow factor, people won't notice the noise.

# 6 - The ability to freeze the subject in this shot, IMHO, is the super brief explosion of the flash (in thousandths of a sec), not the shutter speed. If ambient light is dark enough, then you should not have worries about not being able to freeze the subject. But if there's enough ambient light, then you'd get worried over ghost image, either in front of or following the subject, depends if you set flash to fire at 1st or 2nd curtain.

I like the idea of a "long term personal project." We should all strive for one, or more. Like, when I got interested in festivals and posting my images online, someone hired me to do it all year round all over Mindanao. Now, my pet personal project is specializing on Mindanao images. I've got enough in all provinces (especially now that Dumagat island is no longer a province, hehe) that I can do an entire coffee table book of Mindanao images.

Keep shootin'!

thank you very much sir bobby! actually i was so jealous of people having cameras with higher frame rates. what i meant was faster recycle coz i was hoping for strobed sequences in this project. not to mention my cam can only do 5 frames in one burst. so yeah, thanks for the insights! it will definitely make things more easier...if you wanna shoot iligan skaters, just tell me. It'd be an honor to shoot with you. Wink

cameras with high frame rates, i used to envy them. but then i've acknowledged the fact that i shoot photojournalism and documentary, NOT sports. so there's no desire anymore. in fact, i enjoyed it when i was shooting RAW with the 300D, coz it's really so slow i was forced to focus on getting it right the first time.

it's different in your case coz you've decided to shoot subjects that require 1000fps. Very Happy

i'm still busy with some writing projects, but yeah, i should have more time shooting for fun now (been shooting mostly for work these past few years), now that i'm past child-rearing years as the kids have gone to college. will keep your offer in mind.

and hey, don't look up too much on me. skills-wise, amateurs and pros are usually equal. pros just have more opportunities coming their way, like being able to shoot in tawi-tawi's farthest islands, or in the deep tunnels of diwalwal. but amateurs if given the chance will outperform the pros resting on their laurels. :-)

wow! words from the masters themselves!

Gaps: As i have stated in my photoblog, freezing action is my thing. if your offer is open to everyone, i would like to shoot skaters. i tried skateboarding a few months back, but didn't work out. Sad haha

"amateurs and pros are usually equal. pros just have more opportunities coming their way" - mainspire pud mi ani mga amateurs ani Sir Bob. Very Happy
